James Fox

Senior Science Associate

James Fox is a Senior Science Associate at Schmidt Sciences, where he leads the AI Safety Science program and supports the broader mission of the AI and Advanced Computing Institute.

Prior to joining Schmidt Sciences, James served as Research Director of the London Initiative of Safe AI (LISA), an AI safety research centre in London that houses academic, industry, and non-profit researchers across multiple organisations and programs. He earned his DPhil in Computer Science from the University of Oxford, where he worked on technical AI safety, supervised by Tom Everitt (Google DeepMind) and Michael Wooldridge & Alessandro Abate (University of Oxford). His research has mainly focused on game theory, causality, and reinforcement learning. James also holds an MSci and BA in Natural Sciences (Physics) from the University of Cambridge, has contributed to numerous AI governance projects, and has helped found several AI start-ups.
