Dr. Bryan Lawrence has held the Chair in Weather and Climate Computing at the University of Reading since 2011. He is a senior scientist at the UK National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS), where he previously served as Director of Models and Data. He represents NCAS on the boards of the European Climate Research Alliance and the European Network for Earth System Modelling. His past leadership roles include Director of the UK Centre for Environmental Data Analysis (CEDA) and Director of the JASMIN computing facility.
He currently co-chairs the Climate Model Working Group of the UK National Climate Science Partnership and serves on several advisory and governance boards, including the Advisory Group for Digital Research Infrastructure for UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the Digital Research Infrastructure Investment Board of the Natural Environment Research Council, the Advisory Board of the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre, and UKRI’s supercomputer procurement teams.
His current research focuses on the infrastructure required for climate modelling, spanning algorithms, model software, workflow systems, and methods for managing data from large-scale simulations. In 2025, his projects include: new techniques for efficient analysis of remote data, enhancing land-surface representations in UK climate models, investigating the impact of regional aerosol changes on Asian climate, leveraging large ensembles of climate simulations, and exploring the role of variable-resolution ocean models in climate projections.
