Peter Bauer

Max-Planck Institute for Meteorology

Dr. Peter Bauer spent most of his career in operational numerical weather prediction at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). His background is satellite remote sensing and numerical model development. At ECMWF, he led the activities on satellite data assimilation, model development, polar meteorology, and he created a 10-year programme to accelerate computing and data handling on advanced super-computers including the first efforts to emulate forecasts with machine-learning methods. He coordinated the European flagship programme proposal ExtremeEarth which has been funded as Destination Earth since 2022. During his career he advised national meteorological services, space agencies, WMO and NVIDIA’s Earth-2 project. In this spare time he is verifying weather forecasts on cruising and racing sailboats.
