Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Virtual Institute for Earth's Water
Dr. Ruby Leung is a Battelle Fellow at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and an internationally recognized atmospheric scientist specializing in Earth system modeling and hydrologic processes. Her research spans Earth system and hydrological cycle modeling, hydrometeorology, land–atmosphere interactions, orographic and land surface processes, and extreme events, with particular emphasis on precipitation.
Dr. Leung currently serves as Chief Scientist of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). In addition, she has organized and led major workshops sponsored by DOE, NSF, NOAA, and NASA, and has served on numerous advisory panels and National Research Council and National Academies committees shaping priorities in digital twins, AI/ML, Earth system modeling, and water cycle research.
She was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2017 and is a member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences. She is a Fellow of the AMS, AAAS, and AGU and has received numerous honors, including the AMS Hydrologic Sciences Medal (2022) and the DOE Office of Science Distinguished Scientist Fellow Award (2021).
She holds a B.S. in Physics & Statistics (Chinese University of Hong Kong), as well as a M.S.and Ph,D. in Atmospheric Science (Texas A&M University).
