Thomas Wevers

Program Scientist

Thomas Wevers is a Program Scientist at Schmidt Sciences, where he supports the mission of the Astrophysics & Space institute.

Thomas’ research interests as an observational astronomer broadly span time-domain astronomy and accretion physics, including compact objects — from white dwarfs to supermassive black holes and the environments in which they reside. He has spent more than 300 nights at ground-based astronomical observatories, and works with data from X-ray to infrared wavelengths. Following his PhD work, Thomas moved to the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge (UK), and subsequently held research fellowships at the European Southern Observatory (Chile) and the Space Telescope Science Institute (USA). In parallel to his research, he has been part of the science operations teams for flagship ground- and space-based observatories including ESA’s Gaia mission, ESO’s Very Large Telescope and NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

Thomas holds a PhD in Astrophysics from Radboud University Nijmegen (The Netherlands), a M.Sc. in Astronomy and Astrophysics from KU Leuven and a B.Sc. in Physics from UHasselt (Belgium).
