Alexandros Polyzois (PhD) hails from Greece, where he received his degree in Pharmacy from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). He began his postgraduate journey at the University College London (UCL), School of Pharmacy, UK, where he earned his MSc thesis, which focused on the evaluation of medicinal plants for their anticancer and antioxidant properties. In 2020 he earned his Marie Curie PhD from the University of Paris, Faculty of Pharmacy, France. His PhD project focused on cyanobacterial toxins and their biotechnological applications. During his PhD, Alexandros collaborated with teams from the French Atomic Energy Commission examining the overproduction of cyanotoxins through optimizing a microorganism’s culture conditions. Continuing in the field of Marine Natural Products, he conducted a Postdoctoral GBMF (Moore Foundation) Fellowship at the Department of Microbiology and Biochemistry, Rhodes University, South Africa, where he was investigating the antimicrobial potential of isolates from marine sponges and stromatolites. Now, Alexandros is Postdoctoral “Schmidt Futures, AI for Science” research fellow at the Chemistry and Chemical Biology Department, Cornell University, where he develops an AI-based pipeline that will enable rapid, automatic prediction of chemical structures, removing a major bottleneck in chemistry, biology, and environmental sciences.
