Dr. Vasilii Petrenko is an Associate Professor at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Rochester. His main research interests have to do with understanding natural and anthropogenic climate and environmental change, particularly from the perspective of atmospheric composition and chemistry. He works on measurements of atmospheric trace gas concentration and isotopic composition both in the modern atmosphere and in the ancient atmosphere preserved in glacial ice cores. He and members of his research group regularly travel to atmospheric observatories around the world as well as to Greenland and Antarctica. Recently he has been particularly interested in improving understanding of the global atmospheric methane budget. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of New Hampshire and his PhD in Earth Science from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
