    California Institute of Technology

Gregg Hallinan is a Professor of Astronomy at Caltech and Director of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO). He grew up in Ireland, where he completed his degree and PhD at the University of Galway. He arrived in the US as a Jansky Fellow at UC Berkeley in 2010 before joining the faculty at Caltech in 2012. His research is centered on the discovery and characterization of new and variable sources that appear in the radio sky, with particular focus on the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave events. He applies similar techniques to the search for radio emission from exoplanets, with the goal of the first detection of a planetary magnetosphere outside our solar system. Motivated by these broad themes, Hallinan has led the development of a new generation of radio telescopes, optimized for time domain and multi-messenger science. As part of this effort, his group is developing the technology to build the first radio cameras that will allow radio telescopes to create images in real time. This will culminate with the upcoming 2000-dish Deep Synoptic Array (DSA-2000), which will be the world’s most powerful survey radio telescope.
