I am a Schmidt AI in Science Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, where I am also a Stipendiary Lecturer in Biochemistry. My research concerns protein engineering, or how to modify artificial proteins (which underpin some of the most advanced medicines, diagnostic tests, and vaccines) to have desirable properties such as stability. In particular, as a Schmidt fellow I work on how to use large language models to solve the problem of engineering microbes to efficiently produce these proteins. In terms of background, I once trained as a chemist in the north of Spain, before I decided to shift away by doing a masters in computational chemistry in Manchester (UK), and then even further away by undertaking doctorate in applied statistics in Oxford (UK). Outside of research, I am passionate about social dancing, tech entrepreneurship and food science.
