I work broadly across the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and am involved in a number of machine learning initiatives, including Merlin Sound ID and rating the aesthetic quality of our media. My current research focuses on incorporating predictions from the sound ID feature of the Merlin bird app into species distribution models. I am also spearheading initiatives on incorporating species’ trait and evolutionary information into our ecosystem. My research spans a wide range of topics, from conservation to phylogenetics, and from molecular biology to species interactions. The thread that unites these topics is a desire to conduct research with broad appeal, high potential impact, and at scale, linking museum collections, careful field observation, and massive citizen science datasets to address fundamental questions in ecology, evolution, and conservation.
